Craig Swartz launches his campaign at the Democratic Party Oktoberfest fundraiser and outlines his values for the campaign
Today I announce my candidacy for the State Senate representing the 26th District of the Ohio General Assembly in the 2020 election. It is my choice to take this first step outside the comfort and safety of my family and my home and confront head on all of the hardships and perils that I may encounter on this difficult journey I now undertake. I suffer from no illusions as to the outcome that may await me at the end of this road but I will not allow fear to confine my actions nor let it define who we are as people.
In these darkest of days, the likes of which most of us have never experienced in our lifetimes, I choose to become a light-bearer seeking to help reignite the long extinguished torch of our party that once boldly guided us through tempestuous times, such as these. It is my choice to stand up and defy those who would define and dictate to us terms such as “alternative facts”, “fake news” and the “new normal”.
I reject those who would straightjacket our lives to such an extent that it renders us powerless; thereby stripping us of our dignity, depriving us our ability to strive for something better, and ultimately forcing us to just accept the status quo. I choose to bring truth to power and speak for those whose voices have been gerrymandered into submissive silence.
I am color blind to the reds and blues so broadly painted by those who seek to divide us into corners of their own doing. They have sought to separate our hearts from our minds by labelling us as either this or that kind of person and preventing us from sharing our common values and dreams with each other. The level of hate and vitriol now being hurled at one another further deters all Ohioans from ever seeking common ground; thus denying us a chance to achieve a better community, a better State of Ohio, overall.

My pride in the Buckeye State runs deep; born and raised in Cleveland, graduated from Ohio State, proudly represented Ohio in my years abroad, engaged in Ohio politics upon each return to my home state, and now settled in the rural Northwest that has instilled in me a new appreciation for the folk that contribute so much to our Buckeye culture. I can confidently share with you that I was born with empathy and this ability has enabled me to constantly search for new ideas to help the many, but I am clearly not an empath. I cannot absorb the pain and suffering of all those I have encountered or learned about during my lifetime and dispel such hardship into the ether. However, I can help convey those feelings to others so that they may grow their own understanding and unite with me in cause to alleviate the adversity felt by so many.
I am also a futurist at heart; someone who thinks about the future but uses past historical markers to use as guideposts so that past mistakes can be avoided resulting in brand new actions taken with successful results for our community. And I have an idea for our future that I will share with you along the way that has many parts but the whole of which can achieve a much better outcome for all Ohioans. And it is my desire to portray for you and all Ohioans; a more mindful, multicolored mosaic comprised of all of Ohio’s peoples that more fully embodies the unique hues of all our soulful values, connecting with our most heartfelt ambitions and peacefully presenting a multitude of long-held common dreams worth striving for. It is my choice to be here today and I hope you will choose to join me in the days to come until next November when we will have reached that pinnacle of our one shared dream, a greater Ohio for all.
